We Can Trust Our King
Last week I shared that I was encouraged by Paul’s words in Philippians 4 that “the Lord is at hand,” that he is near (Phil. 4:5). Because he is near, that gives us reason to “not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
This morning I’ve been meditating on the encouragement I derive from the reality that Jesus is the King. We were reminded of Jesus’ kingship yesterday on Palm Sunday. Hundreds of years earlier Zechariah had prophesied that there would be a day when the king would come “mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9). When Jesus rode that donkey into Jerusalem on that Sunday so many years ago, he proclaimed that the was that king. And not just any king, but THE king, the king of kings, the Almighty.
That means that we can bring our requests to him as King, and we can have confidence that he is able to do something about that which we ask. He is not a genie. He cannot be manipulated. But we can trust that he loves us, that he hears us, and that he is always acting for our good.
Asaph wrote in Psalm 50 that we can call on God in the day of trouble and that he will be deliver us (Ps. 50:15). Jesus is even now seated next to the Father praying for us (Romans 8:34). He is the Almighty King; nothing is too hard for him. He is the Righteous King; he always does what is good. We can trust our king.
Much love,
Barry
